How to fill out hazardous waste labels? |

Hazardous waste generators that store or accumulate hazardous waste on-site must properly label all waste containers. To be in compliance, make sure that you write the following on the designated areas: a. name, address and phone number of the company generating the waste; b. Date when accumulation started; c. Generator's EPA ID number; d. EPA/State Waste ID numbers; e. Waste composition; f. Check the proper checkbox to identify the physical state of the waste; g. Check the proper checkbox to identify the hazardous properties of the waste; h. Write the UN or NA number. Make sure that the UN/NA number characters are at least 12 mm or greater in size; i. Enter the D.O.T. proper shipping name. IMPORTANT - prior to shipping the waste container off-site, the shipping manifest tracking number must be written on the label. |
Our drums seem to have more than one hazard. In this case, which label should take preference? |

If the waste container is holding waste with multiple hazards, then labels for each hazard class should be placed next to each other. Note that the label identifying the primary hazard should be above and to the left of the label designating the subsidiary hazard(s). It's recommended a six- inch space separation between labels. |
Should I use a paper or a vinyl hazardous waste label? |

A vinyl label is recommended for better durability or if the waste container is expected to be exposed to harsh conditions. |
Some of the labels do not seem to stick well on our older drums when they are wet or dirty. Do you have any suggestions? |

Yes, Make sure that the surface is clean and dry. If the outside of the container is oily, please wipe clean with isopropyl alcohol or a similar safe solvent to thoroughly clean the surface. |

When should ORM labels be used? |

According to the Department of Transportation 49 CFR 173.144 - Other Regulated Material (ORM) labels can be used until December 31, 2020. “ORM-D labels” are used when shipping a material such as a consumer commodity, presents a limited hazard during transportation due to its form, quantity, and packaging. The article or substance must be a material for which exceptions are provided in Column (8A) of the § 172.101 Hazardous Materials Table. |
